Sexual health is the ability to embrace and enjoy your sexuality throughout your life. It is an important part of your physical and emotional health. Sexual health issues have a profound effect on a patient’s quality of life, including decreases in physical satisfaction, emotional satisfaction, and general happiness. It is estimated that more than 20 to 30 million Americans suffer from sexual health issues. Both men and women are affected by sexual dysfunction. For men, taking care of your erectile dysfunction (ED) may literally save your life as the arteries of the penis are smaller than in your heart; experiencing ED is like having a heart attack in your penis. For women, your sexual dysfunction also may cause mood swings, muscle weakness and even osteoporosis. Diagnosing and treating your sexual dysfunction may ultimately lead to better bone density and muscle mass.
Sexual problems occur in people of all ages. It can be caused by physical problems and medical conditions, such as heart disease and hormone imbalances, or by psychological problems, like anxiety, depression and the effects of past trauma. While research suggests that sexual dysfunction is common (43% of women and 31% of men) it is a topic that many people are hesitant or embarrassed to discuss. Fortunately, most cases of sexual dysfunction are treatable, so it is important to share your concerns with your partner and doctor.
At San Diego Sexual Medicine we specialize in diagnosing and treating male and female sexual health issues. Not only do we handle common sexual problems, diagnoses and treatments, but we also specialize in complex sexual dysfunction, including endothelial dysfunction, reconstructive/ revascularization surgery for men and women, dyspareunia (sexual pain) in women, and sexual dysfunction after cancer treatment.
