Irwin Goldstein, MD

Vulvoscopy is a procedure that allows a health care provider to perform a detailed examination of the vulva, vestibule, clitoris, urethral meatus, vagina and peri-urethral anterior wall prostate using a vulvoscope to magnify the area between 4 and 40 times and to take multiple photographs.   Vulvoscopy is usually initiated beginning from lateral to medial, and from external to internal. Vulvoscopy is performed to assess the: i) skin overlying the right and left labia majora, ii) the sulcus between the two labia, iii) the glans clitoris and the prepuce using gentle bilateral cephalad prepucial retraction; iv) urethral meatus for the degree of glans protruberance; v) vestibule between Hart’s line and hymen, especially the ostia of the minor and major vestibular glands, using the cotton-tipped swab test for pain; vi) vagina where the speculum exam is performed and the blades are rotated 90 degrees to evaluate presence of vaginal rugae; and vii) quality of the anterior vaginal wall periurethral prostate tissue.
