Dr. Irwin Goldstein has been involved with sexual dysfunction research since the late 1970′s. His interests include penile microvascular bypass surgery, surgery for dyspareunia, physiologic investigation of sexual function in men and women, and diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunction in men and women. Dr. Hartzell performs psychotherapy and is a sexuality researcher at San Diego Sexual Medicine, where she is responsible for addressing the sexuality, relationship, and intimacy concerns of individuals and couples who attend the clinic. Dr. Hartzell earned her doctorate in health behavior with an emphasis in human sexuality, and an EdS and Masters in mental health counseling with a minor in development from Indiana University. Catherine Gagnon is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner at San Diego Sexual Medicine. Ms. Gagnon has worked in a variety of settings over the last 8 years including Private Practice & Planned Parenthood. She currently works with Dr. Irwin Goldstein at San Diego Sexual Medicine where she sees men and women with sexual health concerns. Ms. Gagnon is currently involved in a number of clinical trials regarding sexual dysfunction in men and women. Ms. Gagnon also presents monthly at Alvarado Hospital Sexual Medicine Rounds and to the community to provide much needed education on men and women’s sexual dysfunction. Ms. Gagnon earned her Master’s Degree in Nursing from University of San Diego and her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Lake Superior State University in Michigan.
Julea Minton is a Nurse Practitioner at San Diego Sexual Medicine. She earned her Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of San Diego and Bachelors of Science in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Julea is board certified from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).Julea has worked in a variety of health care related settings including assisting medical/oncology patients at a major local hospital as well as providing individualized care in a private OB/GYN practice. Most recently, Julea has helped patients achieve optimum sexual health at several family planning clinics, seeing both men and women for cancer screening, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, pregnancy prevention and other sexual health concerns. She is also involved with clinical trials at San Diego Sexual Medicine, helping to further advance the sexual medicine field through research and evidence-based practice.
Mrs. Goldstein is an AASECT certified sexuality educator and certified clinical research coordintor. She serves as clinical research manager and program coordinator for San Diego Sexual Medicine, where she is site manager for clinical trials, responsible for educational programs and coordinates with the Sexual Medicine program at Alvarado Hospital and the University of California at San Diego. Mrs. Goldstein combines her knowledge of sexual medicine, her writing skills and her years of fund-raising for non-profit organizations in this position to create educational programs for health care clinicians, industry and the public while raising funds to support The Institute for Sexual Medicine, Inc, a charitable corporation dedicated to research and education in the field.
Mr. O’Meara comes to San Diego Sexual Medicine with experience as Controller/CFO of a hospital, CFO and director of business development of a clinical trials facility and CFO/Practice Manager of a large medical group, as well as senior director of financial affairs for a non-profit agency. His combined skills will provide business support needed by both the clinical practice and clinical research.Mr. O’Meara is a graduate of Tarkio College where he majored in business administration and psychology. His master of health administration degree was earned at the University of Southern California. Interested in alternative medicine, he earned a certificate of completion in Eastern Indian Medicine from the Ayurvedic Institute.
Dr. Kim is a Senior Investigator at the Institute for Sexual Medicine in San Diego, as well as an associate editor of Sexual Medicine Reviews. Dr. Kim has been engaged in research on the physiology of sexual dysfunction since the mid-1980s and has published and lectured extensively. He was among the early investigators to describe the role of nitric oxide in penile erection and has consistently contributed to the field of sexual medicine, being recognized with numerous research prizes from various sexual medicine societies. He previously served as the Assistant Director of the Laboratory for Sexual Medicine Research at the Boston University School of Medicine and was a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Sexual Medicine for the first decade of the journal...

Drs. Biewenga and Trofimenko are currently the sexual medicine fellows training under Dr. Goldstein at San Diego Sexual Medicine and teaching urology residents from UCSD at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla. Each physician is spending half of the year at Kaiser Permanente training with Dr. Eugene Rhee.
